Kangaroos

Last week we learned about kangaroos. It was H’s turn to pick the topic, and that’s what she wanted to learn about.
We mostly read library books, watched a video, and sang songs and read poems every day. On Wednesday we drew pictures and made puppets. On Thursday we had potato sack races to see how hard it was not to be able to move our legs apart from one another like kangaroos. We also cooked some “kangaroo” food on different days.
It was amazing to learn how the joey is born at 5 weeks, crawls from the birth opening up the mom’s tummy and enters the pouch, where it grows for several months before coming out. Also that the mom can get pregnant right away, but her body puts the growth of the fetus on hold until the first joey leaves the pouch for good. Pretty cool stuff!
